Concert will raise money for food, water wells

STILLWATER, Okla. — For its third year straight, a local concert showcasing local performers will be exclusively backed by a live band.

“Concert with a Conscience” takes place 7 p.m. Saturday, at the Stillwater High School Performing Arts Center.

Staff member Gina Killough said the money raised this year will go toward the same causes as the previous years, including Jardin de Gracia, a school in Honduras for underprivileged children. Other money raised will go toward the purchase of more pipes for wells drilled in Haiti.

“Our goal is to raise money to feed children and drill wells,” Killough said.

Last year’s concert raised enough to meet that goal, she said.

Musical Director and performer Steve Broadway said approximately 15 performers will take the stage.

“We’re doing some Little Big Town, Earth Wind and Fire, Lady Antebellum, Edgar Winter, Chicago, Linda Ronstadt and Charlie Daniels,” he said.

More than 18 songs will be performed by local artists. Broadway said those attending can expect “surprisingly good musical entertainment.”

“It is a lot of fun,” he said.

In addition to the concert, more than $400 worth of Kicker products will be given away and raffle tickets for a custom guitar will be sold.

“We’re raffling off a custom-built guitar,” Broadway said. “We won’t have the drawing that night, but the raffle sales will go to the same cause as the ticket sales.”

Raffle tickets will be sold in the lobby prior to and during intermission of the show. The guitar is made from the wood of an old barn located in Stillwater under the name Dog Tired Guitar.

“It’s very unique and very well made,” Broadway said.

Broadway said the show continues to grow every year.

“We’re hoping for 1,000 people this year,” he said. “We had about 550 the first year, about 750 last year and we’ll see.”

The show will continue to grow in other ways possibly, he added.

“We’re looking in the future to also meet local needs that fall outside the mission of the nonprofit agencies here in Payne County,” Broadway said.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $25 for preferred seating. Tickets can be purchased at the door. The show is all ages.
