Stillwater Public Library schedules Family Fun Night Tuesday

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Public Library is set to host a night of popcorn and movie entertainment.

Family Film Night continues Tuesday with a showing of “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” the story of a businessman, played by Jim Carrey, who inherits six lively penguins.

“This is the second time that we’ve done it,” said Assistant Children’s Librarian Levonn Collins. “It’s kind of a new program or thing that we’ve started doing.”

In December, attendees watched “The Polar Express.”

“I think we had about 40 that came that evening,” she said.

The event is free and open to the public. The latest movie continues the trend of using adaptations of hit books.

“It was an activity that they could come to together at the library and one that we would hope that would encourage them to pick up some books and read while they’re here,” Collins said.

Popcorn will be served.

“We have popcorn for everyone, but we ask that they bring their own drinks with a lid on it,” she said.

Children’s Librarian Elizabeth Murray said Family Film Night is a tie-in with the Winter Reading Program.

“We offer prizes for small steps and at the end we’ll have drawings for larger gift cards,” Murray said.

The next program at the Stillwater Public Library will be a visit from Critter Tales, Inc.

“It’s a nonprofit organization,” Murray said. “Their mission is to promote awareness of wildlife and natural conservation.”

Founder and Director Jennifer Lance will bring animals including a chinchilla, owl, ferret, snake and hedgehog for children with which to interact.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
