School board races to be contested in six districts

STILLWATER, Okla. — Six area school board races will be contested when voters go to the polls Tuesday.

Board seats at Yale, Perry, Frontier, Morrison, Oilton and Drumright are up for grabs.

Early voting will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Monday at the Payne County Election Board in the County Administration Building, 315 W. Sixth Ave.

Polls open on Election Day on Tuesday at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Voters are required to show identification at their polling place. Voters are allowed to vote only in their district. Voters can find their polling place by visiting www.ok.gov/elections and click on the “where to vote” tab.

The Oklahoma State Election Board will have a running tabulation of election results on Tuesday. The final vote tally will be certified at 5 p.m. Feb. 15.

At Yale, incumbent Steve Winterbottom will be challenged by Matthew Litterell. At Perry, William Erick Walton, April Sewell, Janet Brand and Christina Morrill will challenge for one seat.

At Frontier, Brad Childs and Rexford Tautfest will vie for seat 3. At Morrison, Phil Berkenbile will go against seat 3 incumbent Tony Wisely.

At Oilton, John Favalora will face Mendie Campbell for seat 5, while Jimi Dotson goes against Penny Gooch for seat 3 at Drumright.

Several incumbents will run unopposed, including Stillwater Board of Education member Debbie Vincent.

Also running unopposed are Oscar Montelongo at Glencoe, Winfrey Kinzie at Perkins-Tryon, Trudy Evans (seat 3) and Randy Grellner (seat 5) at Cushing, Sean Spiva at Ripley, Jerry Franklin (seat 5) and Sherri Huneycutt (seat 4) at Meridian Technology Center and Robert Giddeon at Oak Grove.

Payne County Election Board secretary Alyson Dawson said no bond issues are on the ballot for February, but Cushing Public Schools has a $39.7 million bond election set for March.

Cushing Superintendent Koln Knight said the bond issue is for improvements to the school, including the construction of a new middle school that will include a fifth- and sixth-grade wing and a seventh- and eighth-grade wing.

The bond also is for renovation of the auditorium, resurfacing the track and energy-efficient upgrades at the four elementary school sites.

“I am being as active as I can, speaking to groups,” Knight said.

Knight will be at the school’s central office each Monday at 6:30 p.m. for anyone who wants to ask questions about the bond issue.

Knight said he will have the open-door meetings each Monday up to the March 5 election.
