Payne County Budget Board extends raises to newest employees

STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne County employees with less than two years experience will get a 5 percent raise, the Budget Board decided Monday.

County employees with more than two-years experience received 5-percent raises on Oct. 1. New employees didn’t receive pay increases because they are eligible for pay increases after their first year of employment.

The Budget Board, which is comprised of the county’s elected officials, unanimously approved raises for the new employees Monday. The pay increases will be reflected on employees February checks, County Clerk Glenna Craig said.

The Budget Board will need to decide in its March meeting if the raises are retroactive to Oct. 1, Craig said.

The Payne County Sheriff’s Department had built its budget around 5-percent raises for all its employees, Sheriff R.B. Hauf said.

The Sheriff’s Department has mistakenly passed on the raises to some of its newest employees. Capt. Kevin Woodward said seven employees will need pay adjustments.

Hauf apologized to the Budget Board for the misunderstanding.

County Assessor James Cowan said his office’s budget included some additional funding that can be applied toward the raises.
