VIDEO: Denney applauds Senate panel's move to bolster alternative education

OKLAHOMA CITY — Legislation unanimously approved in a Senate committee Wednesday will bolster alternative education programs, according to state Rep. Lee Denney.

“It has been about 20 years since we last made changes how we fund alternative education programs,” the Cushing Republican said. “I applaud the Senate Appropriations and Budget Committee for moving this bill forward. With all the progress we are making in education, I think it is important to ensure all students benefit.”

House Bill 2640, by Denney and state Sen. Jim Halligan, R-Stillwater, would require school districts to provide at least two alternative education programs. The legislation would direct a portion of state aid funding to those programs and require the state Board of Education to implement a three-tiered system of alternative education.

According to the state education department, the agency’s budget request includes $3.65 million in additional funding to cover the cost of providing alternative education.

The legislation was approved by the Senate Appropriations and Budget committee and  awaits consideration on the Oklahoma Senate floor.
