The cost of food can put a major dent in any budget. SHARE Food Network, a nonprofit food program, can help individuals pay less for their groceries. Unlike most food programs that are need-based or require some type of qualification, SHARE is opened to everyone.

SHARE has a volunteer host site located in Stillwater, Highland United Methodist Church SHARE located at 5424 North Stallard.

“We decided that we really needed a food program like this in our community,” said Larry Poindexter, volunteer coordinator for Highland UMC. “I think every community has issues where a food network program, like SHARE, can really make a difference in a lot of families’ budgets.”

SHARE offers three packages: The Your Health Counts Classic, an all produce package, a featured special and an ala-carte menu, with approximately 15 items. People can order as little or as much as they like.

“We have been very pleased with the menus, food items, produce and the ability to pick and choose through the menu for food items,” said Poindexter.

So how does this program work? SHARE is a once a month food program. At the beginning of the month, customers place their order and pay, either by going to their local SHARE site, ordering online or by phone. Depending on how you order, payment is by credit card, vision card, check or cash. Then at the end of the month, participants return to their local host site and pick up their order.

Volunteers with Highland UMC SHARE will be able to take orders or answer questions by calling 372-8001, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.

SHARE advertises that it offers food up to 50 percent off retail price. The reason SHARE can offer such a huge discount is it buys all of its food in-bulk, none of the food is donated, and it works with a team of volunteers. Right now, SHARE operates in eight states with the help of more than 6,000 volunteers and only 25 paid employees.

“SHARE is really focused on the message that it is for everyone,” said Poindexter. “Everyone, no matter how much they make, can stand to save some money. And why not save money on something we all need, food.”

Food purchased in September will be picked up Sept. 22, 9:30-11 a.m.
