Shirley Ann Currey Stotts

Shirley Ann Currey Stotts, 78, died in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Stillwater with Father Jim Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Ann Currey Stotts was born on Nov. 16, 1935, in Pawhuska to Gilbert R. Currey and Pearl L. Button Currey. She was the fourth of four children with a large extended family. She was baptized and confirmed in Saint Thomas Episcopal Church. Shirley was raised working in family businesses and cafes and as the piano accompanist for the local dance studio while in high school. Music and folk dance were a very big part of the family fun and entertainment. Her beloved eldest sister, Lilly, was a professional musician.

Shirley attended Pawhuska schools and was on the state Honor Society through high school. She was a member of the Pawhuska High School band and attended a local piano studio for seven years. She was a member and officer for FHA and active in all its fundraisers and trips to state conventions. She was a member of the Wah-Sha-She school newspaper and yearbook staffs.

She married the love of her life, Donald DeWayne Stotts, in September 1954 at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church. They were friends from the fourth grade through high school. Upon marriage, they began their life as a U.S. Air Force family. In those 20 years of service, they lived in 18 different homes stationed at 10 different bases in the United States and Germany. Upon retirement from military service, they came to Stillwater to make their home and have easy access to Oklahoma State University. All five of their children have attended Stillwater schools and OSU. Shirley was a home room mother for 10 years, a job she dearly enjoyed.

Shirley began employment at OSU in 1986 in the department of agricultural engineering. She later worked in the department of electrical engineering and energy lab, and the department of speech pathology and the OSU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. While there, she attended classes at OSU and was a member of the University Singers for six years. Shirley retired from OSU in 2004.

Shirley has been a member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church since 1972. She joined the choir in 1973 and participated regularly through 2013. She served on the Vestry, prayer team, various committees and was co-chair of the bake sale committee for 35 years. She was the cake lady, making cakes for “Jesus’ Birthday Party,” baptisms and confirmations for many, many years. She was a co-teacher of the high school group at the Wednesday night church school and taught or helped with many summer Bible school classes. Shirley was a bow lady for 20 years in the “Hanging of the Greens” for Christmas. She loved St. Andrew’s and all its wonderful people through the years.

Shirley’s greatest  loves were God, family and friends. She was a fierce mother hen and relished being Nana to all the grandchildren. Any time was a good time to get together and enjoy each other. She enjoyed traveling, everything music and dancing, cross-stitching, sewing, painting, cooking and was an avid baker and candy maker.

She is survived by three daughters, Debra Ann and husband Gerald Butcher of Oklahoma City, Donna DeAnn Stotts-Koumbis of Perkins, Vanessa RaeAnn Stotts-Swinford of Stillwater, and two sons, Donald Ray Stotts of Stillwater and Wesley DeWayne Stotts of Garden Ridge, Texas. She has 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one surviving sister, Betty Wade of Pawhuska; a beloved niece, Dolores Hulsey of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
