Orpha Loewen Powell, 97, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 30. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Orpha Loewen Powell, who was the fourth of five children, was born to John and Amelia Goerke Loewen in Hitchcock on Aug. 31, 1916. After graduating from Watonga High School in 1934, and attending two years at the Oklahoma College for Women, young Ms. Loewen completed a bachelor’s of science at the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1938. She was then a high school teacher until marrying Robert Wayne Powell in Watonga on May 25, 1940. During the Second World War, the newlyweds resided in Ville Platte, La., where Mr. Powell was employed by Continental Oil Company, and then moved to Stillwater when Mr. Powell became a wholesale dealer for Conoco, Inc. The Powells had three children; when they were older, Mrs. Powell returned to college and earned her master’s of arts degree in speech therapy from Oklahoma State University in 1964. She went on to teach speech therapy in the Stillwater Public School system until retiring in 1981. In 2006, to be closer to their family, Mrs. Powell and her husband moved to Dallas, Texas.
Mrs. Powell’s memberships included: Kappa Kappa Iota, life member of the Kappa Delta Sorority, the American Speech and Hearing Association, the Oklahoma Speech and Hearing Association, the Stillwater Porcelain Artists and the Payne County Retired Educators Association. She was a charter member of both the Beta Delta of Delta Kappa Gamma and GN of P.E.O. and she was a member of the Payne County Child Welfare Advisory Committee when the Tri-County Youth Services were organized in 1972. Additionally, she was a volunteer of the auxiliary of the Stillwater Medical Center and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Debra Jane Powell, two brothers, Victor Loewen and Art Loewen, and two sisters, Irma Smith and Dorotha Dory. She is survived by her two sons, Wayne Powell and his wife, Cindy, of Katy, Texas, Mike Powell and his wife, Gayle Glosser, of Parker, Texas. Grandchildren Jason Powell, Houston Texas, Jana Powell Mousoudakis and her husband, Jimmy, their two children, James and Jordyn, of Katy, Texas, David Powell and Courtney Smith of Dallas, Texas, Teresa Powell and Ryan Irish of Dallas, Texas, Deryck Jernigan and his wife Michelle, and their three children, Maryssa, Morgyn and Megyn, of Frisco, Texas, and Greg Jernigan and his wife, Mandy, and their two sons, Peyton and Mason of Parker, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
