Franklin Max Porter

Franklin Max Porter, 89, of Glencoe, passed from this life on March 25, 2013, with his loving family by his side.  Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, and the family will hold a memorial service celebrating Max’s life at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Church of Christ in Glencoe.

Franklin Max Porter was born on Jan. 22, 1924, in western Payne County. He attended grade school in Darnell and Orlando before transferring to Glencoe, where he graduated high school.  Following high school, Max moved to Wichita, Kan., where he worked at Boeing, manufacturing aircraft. On Sept. 30, 1944, Max married June Neely, his high school sweetheart. While working at Boeing, he received orders from selective services to return to his family farm, as his three older brothers had been drafted into the war. Max returned to help his family on the farm and in 1948, he began working as a road grader in Payne County. In 1951, Max went to work at the Oklahoma State University Physical Plant, a job he enjoyed for more than 17 years. In 1968, he took a supervisor position at the Ponca City Municipal Power Plant. In 1986, Max retired and in 1995, he returned to the Glencoe area.

Next to his family, Max’s passion was music. Max was an accomplished jazz and western swing guitar player, and he also played the fiddle. Starting as a teenager, Max played in bands and traveled the region performing at dances and parties. Max also generously volunteered his time. For many years, Max and his friends visited nursing homes and senior centers in the Ponca City and Stillwater area playing music for the residents. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Ponca City Salvation Army. Max was a Mason for most of his adult life, spending his later years in the Ingalls/Glencoe Masonic Lodge. Max was a loving and generous man who always had a story for a friend or a lesson for his family. He had a good sense of humor, and he enjoyed a good laugh. Max was a wonderful husband, a loving yet firm father, a dedicated employee, and an honest friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents:  Charles Porter Sr. and Kate Porter; three brothers: Charles Jr., Meryl and Veryl Porter; a sister,  Thelma Cullers, and an infant granddaughter.

Max is survived by his wife June, of the home; three children: Beverly Davis and Bob Perry of Stillwater.  Ronda Braga and husband Bruce, of Ponca City;  Mark Porter and Charlotte Johnson of Glencoe; four grandchildren, Brian Davis and wife Dawney, of Broken Arrow.  Staci Cundiff and husband Jerry, of Stillwater.  Chad Braga and wife Jennifer, of Houston.  Craig Braga of Ponca City; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler and Emma Davis, Shelbi, Joshua, and Harli Cundiff, and Andrew, Reygan, and Madison Braga.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home 5106 N. Washington.  Stillwater, OK 74075
