MSGT (ret.) Bernard W. Grau

Memorial services with honors will be held for Bernard “Barney” “B.W.” W. Grau, 80, of Stillwater, on Monday, Sept. 16, at noon at the Black Hills National Cemetery, 20901 Pleasant Valley Drive, Sturgis, S.D.

Mr. Grau passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Lafayette General Hospital.  He proudly served in the United States Navy and the United States Air Force.

He was a highly decorated Vietnam veteran, serving as crew chief on a “Jolly Green Giant” helicopter for rescue missions during the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed traveling to visit with friends and family.  When he would travel he would often take backroads where a one-day trip may take a week.

He loved to brag about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always carrying pictures to show everyone. He was truly a joy to many to have around for spirits and laughter. He always had something humorous to share with everyone. Sometimes, he would even pull  out of his pocket “the chicken” or a good joke. Our hearts will always be filled of the wonderful memories he has shared with us all.

Mr. Grau was one of 11 children born to the late Albert and Gladys (Bent) Grau on Aug. 1, 1933. In addition to his parents, Mr. Grau is preceded in death by his brothers: Erwin and Raymond, sisters: Myrtle Bailey, Mavis Sexton, Mildred Penfield and Betty Simon; son Wayne, daughter Robyn Kemp, grandson Jason Hussey. He is survived by siblings: Beth Fisher, Larry Grau (Beverly), Lyle Grau (Patty), Allan Grau (Sharon); his children Deborah Hussey (Ron) of Greenland, N.H.,  Vicky Knopf (Bill) of North Augusta, S.C., Elaine West (Glen) of Goose Creek, S.C., Kimberly Garrett (Brealand) of Abbeville, La., Bernard Grau of St. Matthews, S.C., Dewayne Grau (Doris) of North Augusta, S.C., Angel Rogers (Joe) of Stillwater; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
