Vern Yost

Vern Yost, 90, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, in Guthrie. He was born Dec. 6, 1922, in Mulhall, to Albert and Laura Yost.

Vern was born on the land where he was still farming in Mulhall. In 1940 after high school, Vern spent two years as a foreman on the Union Pacific railroad in Wyoming. He then joined the Army Air Forces and served as a sergeant. While serving overseas, he performed the duties of an aircraft mechanic and electrician. He also worked on the B-29 aircraft repairing and maintaining electrically controlled gun turrets and equipment. He also made occasional flights over enemy territory. He was honorably discharged Dec. 23, 1945. After serving in the military, Vern, or “Whitie” as he was affectionately known, returned to the railroad as an engineer with what was later known as Burlington Northern Santa Fe. He stayed with railroading for 40 years and retired in 1985.

After retirement, Vern became a full-time rancher and farmer. Vern and his wife Dorothy were also known for traveling. In the 70s, he got his first Honda Gold Wing motorcycle and over several years they traveled into every state within the continental U.S. Their travels also included Canada and Nova Scotia. And he was still a member in active standing of his motorcycle club, the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.

Vern was a Mason, Shriner and member of the Eastern Star and sang every Sunday possible in the choir of the First Christian Church in Guthrie. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, and most that have visited his home have seen his trophies on the walls in the living room.

He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, never met a stranger, and remained fast friends with all his acquaintances. Many will remember his mantra, “I love what I’m doin, and I’m doin what I love.”

Vern was preceded in death by his mother and father, Albert and Laura, brother Albert Yost Jr. of Oregon, sister Velma Hilburn of Mulhall, and wife Dorothy M. Yost.

He is survived by his sister, Vera Harper, 92, of Mulhall, only child, Karen Yost, 66, of Edmond, granddaughters Teresa Baldwin, 44, and Jennifer Mooney, 41, both of Edmond. Also surviving him are two greatgrandchildren, Nicholas Baldwin, 11, and Josephine Mooney, 15.

Vern was a member of various organizations including: The American Legion; VFW; Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA, 32 degree; Grand Lodge of Oklahoma, A.F. & A.M., Albert Pike Lodge No. 162; General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; India Shriners Oklahoma City; India Temple Legion of Honor; Fishing Shrine Club and Gold Wing Road Riders Association.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Guthrie with Dennis E. Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery, Mulhall. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
