Howard Leaton Davis, 91, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 in Pawhuska, Okla.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Dec. 9, Mount Hope Cemetery, with Rev. Ted Hoffman officiating.

Howard was born in Guymon, Okla. on June 5, 1921.  He attended school in Guymon, Okla.  He joined the Army Air Force at the age of 19, in which he was a pilot for seven years.  During this time, he flew 37 missions over Africa and Italy and later became an instructor.  While in the Air Force, Howard married Edith Patton in Castroville, Texas in 1942.  After his Air Force career, he moved to Payne County and farmed in the Mehan area.  After a short time, he worked in the oil field for Thomas N. Berry in the Stillwater area.  He and his wife moved to Pawhuska in 1961 to purchase Black Gold Perforating Company.  Howard and Edith operated this business for many years.  They retired and traveled for five or six years.  Then they bought Black Gold Motel which they operated for several years.  After a second retirement, Howard became a loving husband and caregiver to his wife.

He was an Army Air Force Master Sergeant, a member of the Ripley School Board, and an active member of the Methodist Church.  He held many offices in the Oklahoma Petroleum Institute.  He enjoyed the oilfield and the people he worked with.  He enjoyed his pets.  He enjoyed the motel business because of the vast variety of the people he met.  In his lifetime, he strived to help many people.

He was preceded in death by his wife, sole mate and business partner, Edith; his parents George and Iris Davis; a brother, Floyd; a brother, James, a sister, Kathlyn; and a grandchild, Sean Davis.

He is survived by a son, Robert, and wife, Beverly Davis, of Pawhuska; a second son, Eric and his wife, Lorinda Davis, of Ripley, Okla.; brother Dwight; sister, Corinne; and grandchildren Alicia Williams of Louisiana; Sheila Edgerton of Cleveland, Okla.; Jake Wilson of Cushing, Okla.; Suzanne Reece of Perkins, Oklahoma and eleven great grandchildren.

McCartney’s Johnson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
