R. Gayle Bennett Fisher

R. Gayle Bennett Fisher, 94, died on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, in Stillwater. A private family burial will be held at Ketchum Cemetery in Ketchum, with Rev. Dianna Bradford of the Ketchum First United Methodist Church officiating. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

On Dec. 27, 1918, Gayle was born to the late Bill and Violet Fike (Adams) Beard in Orla, Mo. She married William Charles Bennett in 1939. They lovingly raised two children together and enjoyed 38 years of marriage before Charles’ death in 1977. In 1979, Gayle married I.T. “Bud” Fisher, and they were together for 19 years before his passing in 1998.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two sisters, June O’Dell and Grace Johnson; and great-granddaughter, Katie Hughes.

Gayle is survived by her son, William C. “Bill” Bennett, and his wife, Marilyn, of Placitas, N.M.; daughter, Glenna Hughes, and her husband, Bob, of Stillwater; six grandchildren: Bobby Hughes, Kathi Tatum and husband Alex, Tonya Hughes, Tawni Bennett, Jodi Needum and husband Brian, and Kristi Bennett; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Billie Patton, of Tulsa; and sister, Geraldine Lane, of Claremore.

Granddaughter, Jodi, said it best:

“This morning my family lost our 95-year-old grandma. She was the smartest, most beautiful person, inside and out. She lived in her own house and was still driving. She kept up with stocks, oil and did crossword puzzles every day. She kept her mind going and that kept her going. She even went to singles groups! You had to drag her out of the casino! We had to keep up with her!! I feel blessed to have had her as a role model for me and my girls. She was very proud that she never had to depend on anyone to take care of her. I’m glad God took her the way she wanted to go — independent! We love you Gayle Fisher, and we already miss you terribly!”

Memorial contributions may be made in Gayle’s name to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation at 825 N.E. 13th St., Oklahoma City, OK, 73104.

Condolences may be sent to the family and an obituary viewed by visiting
