Venable, William R. “Bill,” Ph.D.

William R. “Bill” Venable, Ph.D., was born  April 1, 1946, in Flint, Mich., and died Oct. 10, 2013, in Munster, Ind.

Dr. William R. Venable passed away following a short battle with cancer.  Dr. Venable was a tenured professor in the Educational Studies Department at Oklahoma State University for more than 30 years. His lifelong teaching and research goals were focused on the professional development of educators. His early leadership role as a volunteer in Chiapas, Mexico, in the 1960s was the impetus for a lifelong fascination, respect and love of the Spanish language and Latin American culture. Dr. Venable merged his research and cultural interests in two prestigious Fulbright Fellowships that took him to Colombia and Brazil in the 1980s. He was dedicated to projects that focused on “cultural empathy” and international business culture in organizations.  He also consulted in the private sector.

Dr. Venable was passionate about social and cultural fairness and understanding in the business as well as the educational environment. He empowered his students to make this world a better place with every opportunity they encountered. His early work as a Civil Rights activist in the 1960s and 1970s in Detroit, Mich., spoke to his belief that life was about unconditional love. The legacy he has left behind on countless students and teachers will continue to improve our world forever.

His personal passions also included running and cycling; he would often celebrate his athletic accomplishments with good friends and his favorite craft beers! Dr. Venable was well known for his compassion, intelligence and his outrageous sense of humor which will be so greatly missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents William and Rosemary Venable, and his brother Daniel Venable. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Venable, son, Ian J. Venable; daughter-in-law Niah B. H. Venable; grandchildren, Estelle L. Venable and Elliott C. Venable; former spouse, Susan H. Zann and  siblings:  Christine Whaley (Bob), Matthew Venable, Kathleen Georgiou (Nick), Martha Venable, Michael Venable, Peter Venable (Diane), Patrick Venable (Lore), and Steven Venable, many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special loving friends Aswin Subanthore, Gail Parsons and Lourdes Menendez.

Dr. Venable is dearly missed by all of those who greatly loved him. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of the Calumet Area, 600 Superior  Ave., Munster, IN,  36321-4032. Memorial and celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Bennett Chapel on the OSU campus in Stillwater. The service will begin at 11 a.m.
