Robert “Bob” William Becher

STILLWATER, Okla. — Robert “Bob” William Becher Sr., 96, of Stillwater, passed away peacefully from this life on June 3 in Stillwater where he resided for the last 15 years.  He was born Jan. 16, 1918, in Columbus, Neb., the son of Frank Gustavus and Rose Marie Kipple Becher. He was married to the late Beverley Callahan Becher (passed away in August 1995) for over 50 years.

Bob attended the University of Nebraska where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, Pomona Junior College, where he played football, and the University of Southern California.

Bob had a distinguished military career in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a pilot in the Pacific theatre during World War II and was awarded with the most honorable Purple Heart for his service. During his service, he flew various ranking officers of the Pacific front and dignitaries such as Bob Hope to various strategic places, and completed the Quantico Officer’s Candidate Training in Virginia. After WWII, while attending school he joined the Los Angeles Police Department and was teamed up with his partner, Gene Roddenberry.

Bob retired as the VP over the Alco Division from Smithco Engineering in 1982 and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Stillwater.

Bob enjoyed lots of outdoor activities that kept him in good physical shape, such as tennis, biking, snow skiing, running, swimming and playing handball. He also wanted to keep his mind active so he was an avid reader, attending classes throughout his life and other such activities. He was a very family oriented man and was considered to be the “rock” of the family. Bob loved his pets and was known as the “Dog Whisperer.”  At the late age of 90, Bob wanted to continue flying so he renewed his pilot’s license and continued his passion for flying.

Bob is survived by one son, Robert “Bob” William Becher Jr. and his wife Charlene of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Babette Goodwin and her husband Bill of Stillwater; Jack and Diane Lancaster of Montclair, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. He was adored by his many grand and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beverley Callahan Becher, two brothers, Boots and John Becher, and one sister, Eleanor Karns.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel with entombment to follow at Memorial Park with Paul Jones officiating. Viewing will be held from 10-11 a.m. Friday prior to the service at Stanleys Funeral Home in Tulsa.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to Judith Karman Hospice, P.O. Box 818, Stillwater, OK, 74076. Please visit Bob’s online obituary at
