Weldon Eugene Curran

Weldon Eugene Curran, formerly of Stillwater, went home to be with his Lord and Savior June 5 after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease in Muncie, Ind. He was born May 2, 1928 in Pond Creek as the only child of James and Meta (McIntosh) Curran. He was raised mainly in Stillwater except for a brief period in California.

He grew up in the motel business that his dad ran on Perkins Road, helping in the attached service station. They would later build the Curran Motel on Main Street (what is now the corner of Main and Hall of Fame) and he would take it over after the death of his father in 1954. It was there he would hire a young lady, Mary Baskerville, to be a maid at the motel. Little did he know he would be meeting the love of his life for 52 years. They would begin to date and would marry on Feb. 19, 1961. After they sold the motel, he would go to work for Ace Hardware in Stillwater until he retired.

He would accept Christ as his personal Savior when he was 48 and was a member of First Baptist Church in Stillwater. He was fond of travel and photography and would travel through nearly 30 states, Canada and Mexico. He also loved and collected books and old movies.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Merica Curran currently of New Castle, Ind., two grandchildren, Jimmy and Joshua also of New Castle, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Ruth Baskerville of Arlington Texas, a cousin, Shirley Hodge of Perry, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Curran, his father James Curran and mother Meta Curran-Harbin.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, Ind., with Pastor Bob Chon and Jim Curran officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from noon until time of service Monday. Memorial contribution may be given to the Temple Baptist Church Mission Fund, 2937 Legion Dr., New Castle, IN, 47362.
