Okland Wallace Smith

Okland “Wally” Wallace Smith, 78, died on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at his home in Stillwater, Okla. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012 at University Heights Baptist Church with Pastors John Bugg and Paul Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wally was born on Nov. 15, 1933 in Shawnee, Okla., to Okland Willis and Zelia (Rose) Smith. He married Peggy Joyce Bivins in Beggs, Okla., on Jan. 23, 1955. In Aug. of 1955, Wally entered the United States Army and served for two years before being honorably discharged in Aug. of 1957 with a rank of Major. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves for 13 years. After the Army, Wally graduated from OSU and went on to become the State Director of 4-H Programs for Okla., and was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in 2010. Wally was also a member of the Farm House Fraternity. He enjoyed golfing, doing woodwork, and gardening.   He attended University Heights Baptist Church where he served as the church Treasurer and was a Deacon.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Linda Hunter; sister, Monta Jeane Gayhart; and nephew, Terry Watson.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Peggy Smith, of Stillwater, Okla.; son, Phil Smith, and his wife, Cindy, of The Woodlands, Texas; daughter, Lisa Landburg, and her husband, Jeff, of Catoosa, Okla.; son-in-law, Tom Hunter, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; grandson, Brandon Smith, and his wife, Jessica, of Perkins, Okla.; grandson, Brent Smith,  and his wife, Alicia, of The Woodlands, Texas; granddaughter, Rachel Brown, of Broomfield, Colo.; granddaughter, Kiley Landburg, of Catoosa, Okla.; granddaughter, Jennifer Clark, and her husband, Roger, of Vera, Okla.; grandson, Jared Landburg, and his wife, Shelby, of Chouteau, Okla.; grandson, Dwayne Hunter, and his wife, Monette, of Stillwater, Okla.; granddaughter, Debbie Saunders, and her husband, Greg, of Tulsa, Okla.; ten great-grandchildren with another two on the way; brother-in-law, Bob Bivins, and his wife, Cheryl, of Oxnard, Calif.; and many great nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in Wally’s name to the American Cancer Society at P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123; Judith Karman Hospice at P.O. Box 818, Stillwater, OK 74076; the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation at 205 Youth Development Building, Stillwater, OK 74078; or University Heights Baptist Church Foundation at 323 S. Knoblock St., Stillwater, OK 74074.

Pallbearers will include Ladd Hudgins, Guy Harlow, Derald Suffridge, Jim Rutledge, Ronnie George, Charles Cox, Ray Campbell, Kevin Hackett, Larry Sams, and Ron Justice.
