— Russell Conway, 90, of Stillwater, most recently of Golden Oaks Center, passed away April 18. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stillwater Church of Christ with Mr. Kent Houck officiating. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Russell was a dedicated, loving husband to Beth; her lifelong dish washer, chauffer and camping director, who loved his Lord Jesus, his family and all sports, especially OSU sports. He truly could be described as a people person and was a friend to people from many walks of life, but especially in Oklahoma education.

He retired as director of Oklahoma State University High School and College Relations. He spent his entire career serving Oklahoma education. He began in Tulsa Public Schools, later moving to the Oklahoma Education Association. Russell was probably best known for his 17 years at Oklahoma State University as Director of High School and College Relations. He was known as “Mr. OSU” for his tireless efforts to introduce students across Oklahoma and other states to Oklahoma State.

He received compliments from educators across Oklahoma for his friendly competition in recruiting for OSU. When he retired from OSU, the director of University of Oklahoma student recruiting suggested perhaps Russell would want to work for OU as a recruiter. He declined, but appreciated the offer. After retirement, Russell continued to serve in several positions for the retired educators associations, including OREA Legislative Committee and Emeriti Council. Russell loved students, as well as OSU and often amazed family with his ability to come up with the name of a student he had not seen in 25 years.

Russell was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2001.

Russell was a World War II veteran, serving in Europe with the combat engineers, later receiving his commission as a reserve officer while attending Oklahoma State University.

Russell is survived by spouse, Beth Conway; sister, Robie Boozer of Arlington, Texas; three children, Kent and wife, Cindy, of Plano, Texas, Kevin and wife, Cheri, of Germantown, Tenn., and Kay Lynn and husband, Clint, Cain of Yukon; nine grandchildren, Kannon and Karson Conway, Kolby Nordine, Blake and Chelsea Conway, Stephen, Travis, Aaron, and Abby Cain; and eight great-grand children. Russell was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters and parents John and Alma Conway. All of the five brothers served during WWII.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and caregivers for providing our father the care he needed in his final years.

Memorial contributions may be made in Russell’s name to the OSU Foundation, P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, OK, 74076-1749, International Ministry of Stillwater Church of Christ, 821 N. Duck St., Stillwater, OK, 74075, or Church of Christ University Outreach Program, 821 N. Duck St., Stillwater, OK, 74075.
