Roy Robert Brookshire

Roy Robert Brookshire, born Mother’s Day, May 12, 1949, received his invitation to Heaven’s Easter Parade April 20, 2014, and was promoted to Glory. Home in time for Supper with his parents, Thomas (T.W.) Brookshire and Nancy Emma Turpen Brookshire; his brother, Phillip Brookshire; and sister, Glenda Roseberry, who preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held in his honor at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Stillwater, Okla., followed by burial at sea courtesy of the United States Navy he loved. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

A bit of a scoundrel and scallywag during his early education in Ponca City Schools, he left high school during the Vietnam conflict to join the Navy where he completed his GED. He served on the USS Somers in the engine room and as a fireman.

He returned home to Ponca City and received his associate’s degree in mental health from Northern Oklahoma College, Tonkawa, Okla. where he was on the Dean’s Honor Roll. He continued his education at Mountain View College in Dallas, Texas, and was on the President’s Honor Roll.

He worked for Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Okla., and Stevens Park/Dallas Osteopathic Hospital in Texas. He then became involved in children’s ministry as an assistant bus captain for Gospel Light House Sonshine Club and later with the Dallas Metro Ministries Sidewalk Sunday School in Dallas under the direction of Pastor Clay Wallace.

In Stillwater, Roy was proud to be part of the Salvation Army and might be best known as “Mr. Bell” at Hastings during bell ringing season. He loved serving with the canteen and relief services for tornado victims in Oklahoma and Hurricane Rita victims in Texas.

He left to his survivors a legacy of values, education, faith and service, and a heritage in the Lord. Roy is survived by his wife of the home, Peggy Larkins Brookshire; daughter, Lear, 7; sons, David, 8, and Alexander, 5, all of Stillwater; stepdaughter, Piper Davis and husband, Ron, their children, Ronnie and Chris Sandoval and great-granddaughter, Scarlet, and Hannah Davis Sutton and David Sutton and great-grandchildren, Colin, Cassie and Chad; daughter, Pallas Jenkins and children Quillan Brookshire Parker, Barrick, and Quinna Jenkins of Stillwater; daughter, Tila Bailey and husband, Bruce, and children Syndle, Sonnie and Stedson of Oklahoma City; daughter-of-the-heart, Bridgette Faulkner, and husband, Matt and children Alanna and Zoe; two brothers, Tom Brookshire of Ponca City and Kenneth Brookshire of Colorado; and nieces and nephews too numerous to count.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Salvation Army Children’s Services and Camp Scholarship, 1101 S. Lowry, Stillwater, OK, 74074.

Condolences may be emailed to the family and an online obituary may be viewed by visiting
