Mona Ann Lane

Mona Ann Lane was born Jan. 27, 1943, in Tecumseh, to William and Elizabeth (Douglas) Lane. She passed from this life April 16, 2014, from a sudden Illness. A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at the Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mona was raised with her two sisters in Tecumseh, Okla. and graduated from Tecumseh High School (1961) and then the University of Oklahoma (1966) majoring in home economics. She earned a master’s degree (1971) and a doctorate (1989) in family relations and child development from Oklahoma State University. Her OSU career stretched from Instructor and lead teacher in the Child Development Laboratory (1971-81) to early childhood education assistant professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science (1980-2013). She retired Feb. 1, 2013.

In many respects she was a trailblazer, experiencing many firsts in her career. She was one of the first Head Start teachers when Head Start was established in the 1960s and was a teacher in the Head Start program for the Oglala Sioux tribe in Pine Ridge, S.D. (1966-1968). She was a strong leader in the early childhood field at the state and national level, serving as president of the Oklahoma Association on Children Under Six and as president of the state affiliate of the Association for Childhood Education International. She was the first to develop the OSU Infant-Toddler Lab and also served as interim director of the OSU Child Development Labs. She served the state of Oklahoma as a representative to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, as a representative to the Southern Early Childhood Association, and as a national representative to the World Organization for Early Childhood Education.

Lane was an early pioneer in using technology in her teaching. She developed internet courses and taught on both the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses of OSU.

She taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate classes in early childhood education. Lane planned several study tours to Europe taking both students and faculty. She also went to Europe to work with Cameron University, the University of Oklahoma with a Department of Defense grant to teach courses in Germany. The Pan-Hellenic Council and Interfraternity Council recognized her as the 2007-2008 College of Human Environmental Sciences Outstanding Faculty Member. The Oklahoma Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators honored her as the 2008 Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator.

Lane was an ardent OSU fan and attended many OSU athletic events. Her commitment to OSU athletics extended beyond athletic events as was evident through her service as a member of the OSU Athletic Council.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Lee and Elizabeth Douglas Lane, and sister, Billy Cochran. She is survived by her sister Collen Gray and husband, William, of Pittsburg, Kan.; nephews Ed (Kristy) McKechnie of Arcadia, Kan. and Scott (Lisa) Gray of Pittsburg; nieces Rebecca (Jeff) Ash of Des Moines, Pamela (Merlin) Johnson of Bartlesville, Okla. , and Charlotte (John) Yates of Little Rock, Ark. ; six great nephews; two great nieces; and by the many friends, colleagues, and students who loved her and cherished her friendship.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial to OSU Foundation: Mona Lane Scholarship. Please make checks payable to OSU Foundation-Mona Lane Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1749, Stillwater, OK 74076.
