Etta Joan Eberhart

Former resident Etta Joan Eberhart, passed away, Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013. She was 82.

Born Sept. 21, 1930, on her grandparent’s farm near Ralston to James and Irene (Wilhelm) Cummings, Joan was raised on the banks of the Arkansas River.  She attended school and graduated from Ralston in 1949.

On July 20, 1949, Joan married Tony Eberhart in Perkins and to this union their children, Carol, Cheryl (Sheri), Martin and Melia were born. They were married 62 years until Tony’s death on May 26, 2012.

Joan worked various jobs, but the one she was most proud of was working for Bendix Corp which manufactured components for spacesuits used for the landing of the moon in 1969.

 A talented seamstress, she also loved to crochet, knit, cook and travel with her husband.  Joan made sure every one of her children’s needs were met. She never met a stranger and was always willing to help those in need.

 She is survived by her children, Melia Douglas and husband Dick of Cordell, Carol Ann Eberhart of San Antonio, Texas, Martin of Lexington, and Cheryl Smith and husband Chuck of Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren, Cole and Case Douglas, Amber Myers, James Eberhart, Seth Smith and Sarah Smith and five great-grandchildren; sister, Carol June Larkins and husband Col. John B. Larkins of Gadsden, Ala.; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Mitchell of Longview, Texas, and many other extended family and friends.

 She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, siblings Wanda, Virginia, Madilyn, Marie and Jake.

 A memorial service for Joan and Tony will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Ralston and will be announced at a later date.

 Memorial contributions may be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
