John Richard Geresi

John Richard Geresi, a resident of Stillwater, died in the presence of his family on Jan. 20, 2013, of brain cancer. He was 76 years old.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 7, 1937, the son of John Geresi Sr. and Mary Geresi, both of whom predeceased him. He attended Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. and graduated in 1955. He was married to Josephine Clemente Geresi on Nov. 8, 1959, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

He worked for many years as the owner of John Michael’s Beauty Salon in Merrick, N.Y.  Upon his relocation to Stillwater in 1993, he worked as a groundskeeper at the Karsten Creek Golf Course. He was an avid and accomplished sportsman, and led his high school soccer team to the New York City Championship as a senior.  He also played semiprofessional soccer for the Danish Athletic Club.  

He was an accomplished golfer as well, and was seen regularly on the Stillwater Country Club golf course. A devoted New York Yankee fan, he was also a regular at many Oklahoma State University athletic events.  He was an especially ardent supporter of the Oklahoma State Cowgirls basketball team, and attended most of their home games over the past decade.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine, and his two sons, John of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Robert of Stillwater, and their respective spouses Jean Geresi and Connie Geresi. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Jack and Michael Geresi of Manhattan Beach, California, Joseph and Jenna Geresi of Tulsa, and Aldin and Kendall Irwin of Stillwater.  

A Rosary will be said from 6:15 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater; a public viewing for family and friends will be held immediately after from 7 to 9  p.m.  A funeral mass will be held at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, 201 N. Knoblock St. in Stillwater, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.  A private funeral service will be held at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City that afternoon, and a public reception for friends and family will be held later that day.
