Helen Florence Helt

Helen Florence Helt, retired Stillwater businesswoman and 80-year member of First Baptist Church, died in her sleep Wednesday morning, Feb. 26. She was 96.

Burial was 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with a memorial service at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Jim Ragland, retired missionary and longtime family friend.

Arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home.

Mrs. Helt was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Yale and moved to Stillwater in 1933, where she graduated from Stillwater High School in 1934. She married Roy Helt on June 24, 1937, and they enjoyed almost 59 years of marriage before his death in 1996.

Mr. Helt began photography as a hobby and soon he and Mrs. Helt were operating a photography business out of their home. The business expanded and became Helt Studio, a well-known Stillwater business for many years. Mrs. Helt, who joked that “his hobby became my business,” published a book entitled Wedding Photography: We Never Know What Might Develop, which recounts many of their unusual and humorous experiences photographing weddings.

The Helts were active in the Professional Photographers of Oklahoma, Southwest Professional Photographers Association, and Professional Photographers of America. Mrs. Helt, who was regularly a hospitality host at photo conventions, received the PP of A National Award for Meritorious Contributions to Professional Photography in Oklahoma and shared the SWPA national award with her husband.

In Stillwater, Mrs. Helt was active in the Research Club and the 20th Century Club, hosting meetings and holding offices in both. At First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school and was active in Missions organizations.

She was preceded in death by Mr. Helt, three sisters, a brother, a son-in-law, and her parents.

Mrs. Helt is survived by her son, Ken Helt (Nelda), daughters, Carol Hix (Harry) and Ruth Brown, all of Stillwater; five grandchildren, Billy Brown (Alison), Sheri Helt (Jacob), Cindy Kittler (Art), Harvey Hix (Kate Northrop), and Donna Brunner (Mark); five great-grandchildren, Warren Kittler (Casie), Charity Kittler, Matthew Brunner (Hannah), Jason Brunner, and Elise Brunner; two great-great-grandchildren, Laysia and Marcus Kittler; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Judith Karman Hospice; P.O. Box 818, Stillwater, OK., 74076, or the Professional Photographers of Oklahoma, in care of Helt Photography, Nelson/Helt scholarship fund: In care of Helt Photography, 910 W. 7th St., Stillwater, OK., 74074
