Carrie Mabel Shirley

Carrie Mabel Shirley, 89, of Tulsa, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.

Services were held on Monday, Dec. 23 at Harvard Avenue Christian Church, 5502 S. Harvard, Tulsa, followed by interment at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Carrie Shirley was born Jan. 24, 1924, to George and Mabel (Lemon) Jacob in Stillwater.

She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Lea Womack and her husband Jim of Tulsa: one son, Col. Kenneth Ellis Shirley, USAF Ret., and his wife, Patricia, of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, Michelle Carpenter and her husband Dale, Scott Womack, Denise Graham and her husband John, and Kelley Watson and her husband Zac; and four great-grandchildren, Madalyn Rogers, Meagan Carpenter, Kenleigh Graham and Jantz Graham. Carrie’s husband, Glenn Shirley, predeceased her in February 2002. Also predeceasing her were her three siblings, George Jacob, Ralph Jacob and Betty Mushrush.

Carrie Shirley was a lifelong resident of Stillwater, graduating from Stillwater High School in 1942 and attending Oklahoma A&M University. For 35 years, she worked in the Payne County Court Clerk’s Office, retiring as Deputy Court Clerk in 1993. She was active in the police department’s women’s auxiliary, member of Payne County Legal Secretaries, secretary in the Payne County Home Demonstration Office and a member of a home demonstration club.

As a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Stillwater, she was very active in Christian Women’s Fellowship/Disciples Women.  In 2009, she relocated to Tulsa and transferred her membership to Harvard Avenue Christian Church where she has volunteered for the bereavement team and for folding bulletins for Sunday services.

She also volunteered at the Oklahoma Blood Institute where she labeled blood bags twice a month with her Sunday school class.

Carrie was a loving mother and grandmother. She was an avid Oklahoma State University football fan who never missed a game on television and attended numerous games in person before her health began to wane.  She loved to cook and make desserts, travel, socialize with many friends, play bridge, work in the yard and most of all to be with her family.

Pallbearers were Ken Shirley, Jim Womack, Scott Womack, Dale Carpenter, John Graham and Zac Watson.
