Lucy Lou Fite, 95, a long-time resident of Stillwater, died Tuesday in San Antonio, Texas where she resided with her daughter, Priscilla. Her funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Lucy was born near Addington in Jefferson County, Okla., on Aug. 31, 1917. After graduating from Addington High School, she earned a BA degree from Central State Teacher's College in Edmond. She met and married her husband of 67 years, Robert C. Fite, in 1940. Lucy and Bob came to Stillwater after WWII to attend graduate school at OSU where Lucy earned her MA degree. They made OSU their lifetime love when Bob joined the Geography department as a professor. Oklahoma State University was a source of pride for Lucy, and she and Bob were regular fans at OSU football, baseball and men's and women's basketball games.
They raised two daughters, Cynthia of Denver, Colo., and Priscilla of San Antonio, Texas. There are three grandchildren, Justin Garland of Durham, NC; Robert Brashear of Katy, Texas; and Sarah Brashear of San Antonio. Lucy also has one great granddaughter, Cecilia Rose Brashear of Katy, Texas. A sister, Mildred Thompson, of Clovis, Calif., and a brother, Jerry Smith, of Oroville, Calif., also survive her. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister and two brothers.
Lucy was an avid reader and especially loved Oklahoma history, western literature, and the stories and music of the American cowboy. She read four newspapers every day, and enjoyed keeping up with happenings in Stillwater, OSU and Oklahoma. Asked if she wanted to travel around and see the world, Lucy pointed to the ground in her Stillwater backyard and said, "This is paradise right here! Why would I want to go anywhere else?" Lucy also enjoyed needlework, quilting, gardening, cooking, and collecting antiques.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Robert C. and Lucy L. Fite Scholarship Fund, c/o OSU Foundation, 400 S. Monroe, Stillwater, OK 74074; or to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, 1700 NE 63rd St., Oklahoma City, OK 73111.
