Robert Call

Robert Call, retired certified public accountant, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in Cushing, at the age of 85.

The son of the late Ira Call and Ita Souders Call, Bob was born on May 28, 1928, in Sedan, Kan., and received his early education in Caney, Kan., graduating from Caney High School in the class of 1946. Following his discharge from the United States Air Force, he graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in accounting.  He became a certified public accountant in 1961, retiring in 1990.

He was united in marriage to Dolores Krepps on July 25, 1949. The couple has made their home in Cushing since 1962. He became a managing partner of  Call, Barrick, Ethridge & Co. working with auditing, tax work, bookkeeping, computer services, management services and financial planning.  He had served on many committees of state and chapter CPA.

In addition to his accounting practice, he was an avid farmer and very active in the Hereford business. Bob and Dolores owned and operated CBY Polled Herefords, a 70-head registered cow operation located in Cushing.  Bob had been an active member in the association since 1975 and had been involved in the merchandising of show prospects, youth projects, as well as domestic and Mexican bull marketing. He was active in both the Oklahoma Hereford Association and the American Hereford Association.

Bob was a former member of the Cushing Lions Club, where he was very instrumental in the success of the Lions Club fruit sale for a number of years. He had served as the Oklahoma District Governor District 3M from 1976 to 1977, served as the council chairman of the District Governors of Oklahoma from 1977 to 1978 and held most of the local club offices. Bob was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award from the Lions Club International. Bob was past-president of the chamber of commerce and helped set up the original home page on the Internet for the chamber.  In 1995, the chamber honored him and Dolores for their involvement in the city.

Bob’s claim to fame was serving as a math tutor for the legendary basketball player Wilt Chamberlain at the University of Kansas.

Survivors include his wife Dolores of the home; one brother, Archie Call of Smithville, Texas; three sisters, Betty Holmburg of Caney, Kan., Iva Schultz of Shawnee and Ella Pace of Bartlesville; several nieces and nephews and a very appreciated friend and ranch hand, whom Bob treated as an adopted son, Dr. Bret White and his wife, Tammy.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Robbins Cemetery, Coffeyville, Kan., with Pastor Kevin Clouse officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, 825 N.E. 13th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73104; Dean McGee Eye Institute, 608 Stanton L. Young Blvd., Oklahoma City, 73104, or to the Hereford Youth Foundation, P.O. Box 014059 Kansas City, MO, 64101.
