Barbara was born on May 1, 1921, in Indianapolis, Ind., to the late Frances Russell and Mildred M. (Hader) Horn. She was raised in Indianapolis on the family farm, and graduated from Dover High School in Boone County. After graduating, she began work as an assistant buyer, first for L.S. Ayers Department Store in lingerie and then Blocks Department Store. In 1945, Barbara married the love of her life, James “Jim” William Irwin Jr., at her parent’s home in Jamestown, Ind. Over the next 14 years, Barbara worked for Dr. Nelson and then Dr. Ronald Sanders. After Jim retired, they enjoyed many winters in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. In 1991, she and Jim sold their farm and moved to Perkins where they stayed until Jim’s death in 1994. Barbara then moved to Midwest City to be closer to her son, Tom, but later decided to move back to the Stillwater area to be closer to her daughter Susie and her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband of 49 years, Jim Irwin, Jr.
Barbara is survived by her son, James William Irwin, III, of Elk City; son, Thomas Russell Irwin, of Midwest City; daughter, Betty Louise “Susie” Cundiff, of Stillwater.; sister, Betty Bowman, of Crawfordsville, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
