Almetrice Kay Johnson, 52, of Stillwater passed into the loving arms of her Savior on March 7, 2013. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and a service celebrating Kay’s amazing life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Stillwater. Public visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home at 5106 N. Washington.
Almetrice Karen Johnson was born on Aug. 16, 1960, to Delbert and Gladys (Moore) Brown in Cushing. She was raised in Stillwater, graduating from C.E. Donart High School in 1979. Following her graduation, Kay spent two years studying at University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond before returning to Stillwater. In March of 1982, Kay married the love of her life and her best friend, Leo H. Johnson. The couple resided in Stillwater where Kay worked for Mercury Marine, Head Start and Stillwater Design, before beginning a career as a secretary for the Oklahoma State University College of Arts and Science. Kay enjoyed her 10-plus years at OSU and made many lasting friendships. She retired from the university due to her illness. She was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Kay enjoyed going to the movies, shopping with her girls, eating barbecue, and being outdoors. She was never happier then when she was with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a generous woman and a people person who loved to be around children and always put her family first. Kay was funny and knew how to make others laugh and her beautiful smile could brighten even the darkest of days. Kay Johnson was a dedicated wife, a caring mother, a proud grandmother and a loyal friend. Her legacy of love and hope will live on through the lives of those she knew and touched with her gentle spirit.
Kay was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys Brown, grandmother, Almetrice Chambers; grandfather, Nathenal Gus Moore; aunts, Sylvia Namio Cook and Bobbie Dillon; uncles, James Moore and William Moore. She is survived by her husband of nearly 30 years, Leo H. Johnson, of the home; three children: Christy Johnson and Alyse Johnson of Stillwater and Nekia Brown of Midwest City; father, Delbert Brown and wife Janet of California; siblings, Rebecca Ann Pannell of Stillwater and Eric Peters and wife Kathie, of Oklahoma City; aunts: Gussie Johnson and husband Wilbert, of Cushing, and Beatrice M. White and husband John, of California; two grandchildren: Johnelle Riley of Stillwater, and Lakeya Burton of Midwest City. She is also survived by numerous other family members and friends.
