Doris Jean Stoner-Hester

Doris Jean Stoner-Hester went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, in Stillwater, Okla., at the age of 90 years, five months and twenty five days.  

 Doris was born on Aug. 2, 1922, in Cleveland, Okla., to Robert Robinson and Mabel Alice (Tauchman) Swan, a pioneer Cleveland family.

 The family moved to the Seminole, Okla., area in 1928, where she received her education.  Following graduation from Bowlegs High School, Doris attended the University of Oklahoma from 1939 to 1943.  During her time there she studied journalism and was one of the first women to study journalism at the university.  Doris was united in marriage to Don W. Stoner on Oct. 11, 1942, in Waco, Texas.  He was a career Air Force officer and his assignments took them too many places including the Republic of Panama, Victoria, Texas, Tokyo, Japan, San Antonio, Texas, Maryville, Tenn. and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  Doris lived in Kiefer, Okla.,  while he served in the Philippines during World War II, in Eunice, New Mexico for a year during his tour in Iceland and in Cleveland during his tour in Vietnam.  Following his retirement, the couple resided in Florence and Coolidge, Ariz., for ten years.  Starting in 1970, while in Coolidge, she worked for the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Service as a secretary in their Community Development program.  They then returned to Cleveland in 1979.  Following the death of Don in 1995, Doris remained in Cleveland.  Later on January 17, 1997, she married Leroy Vance Hester, a life-long friend from their junior high, high school and college days.  They continued to live in Cleveland until May of 2009, at that time Doris and Vance moved to Stillwater where she has continued to live.

 Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School for many years in different cities where they have lived.  She also belonged to the following clubs, in all of which she held offices:  Air Force Officer’s Wives Club, Beta Sigma Phi, General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Newcomers Club, Philomathic Study Club, Triangle Heritage Museum and many bridge clubs.  Doris also worked with Civic Clubs on Texas Red Feather drives, cancer drives and as a Red Cross volunteer.  

 Survivors are her husband Leroy Vance Hester of the home, daughter Pamela Sutton of El Paso, Texas; son Kevin and his wife Carol Stoner of Albany, New York; four grandchildren, Kelly Jean and her husband Dr. Charles Harzke of San Angelo, Texas, Altariel and her husband Derek Gunter of Austin, Texas; Dr. Misty Solis and her husband George of El Paso, Texas; Caitlin and her husband Aaron Satz of Seattle, Wash.; nine great grandchildren Audrey, Jackson, Mariel, Thomas, Morgan, Matthew, Rachael, Luke, Jacob and a host of other relatives and friends that will mourn her passing.  In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband Major Don W. Stoner, United States Air Force Retired; two grandsons, Daniel Thomas Callaham, Stephen Martin Callaham; sister Betty Jane Swan and a son in law James Sutton.

Chapel services will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel with Dick Risinger officiating.  Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
