Johnita Leka, a longtime Yale area resident, passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at her home in Yale at the age of 67 years.
Memorial services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Yale, and will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Yale. Pastor Barry Richards will officiate.
Johnita was born on Oct. 9, 1945, in Okmulgee, to the late Richard and Olive (Cain) McCoy. She grew up in and attended school in Okmulgee, graduating from Okmulgee High School. Johnita married the love of her life, Larry Leka, on Dec. 9, 1962, at her parent’s home in Okmulgee. They made their home on a farm in Yale, where they have lived for more than 50 years. They had been members of a few churches throughout the years: Council Valley Baptist Church, Drumright First Baptist Church and currently First Baptist Church in Yale. Over the years, Johnita loved working with the children and youth in the churches, teaching Bible school, sunday school, music and cooking at Falls Creek. She enjoyed cooking, watching the cattle and riding the four wheeler and golf cart. Most of all, she loved being with her family.
Johnita is survived by her husband of 50 years, Larry Leka, of the home; son, Laurence Leka of Yale; daughters, Lynda “Lori” Martin and husband, Kenny, of Yale and Heather Leka of Yale; brother, Jim McCoy and wife, Linda, of Vonore, Tenn.; sisters, Willo McCoy of Okmulgee, Alice Lee of Sapulpa, Renee Dove of Okmulgee and Laura Jackson and husband, Jerry, of Okmulgee; grandchildren, Loranda Baker and husband, Kurt Baker, Kyle Martin and wife, Morgan, Nathaniel Leka and Logan and Keegan Martin; great-grandchildren, Kyler and Lettie Martin and Wesley and Ethan Baker.
She was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter, Lyndsey Martin.
