Wilburn Johnson, lifelong Cushing resident, went to be with his Lord and Savior in the morning of Sept. 9. 2013. He was 86.
Wilburn, son of Sam and Mamie Johnson, was born on July 6, 1927. He graduated from Booker T. Washington School of Cushing in 1949. Wilburn was an outstanding basketball player fondly known as “Hookman” who helped his team obtain a state championship title. He was an avid sports fan as well as officiated and umpired youth sports.
After graduation, Wilburn served 1950-1956 with the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
On Dec. 22, 1957, Wilburn married the love of his life, Gussie Lee Moore, from Silver City, Okla. They were united in marriage at the home of her parents and remained together more than 55 inseparable years. Their son, Tim, is their pride and joy.
Wilburn was a diligent, hard worker. He was employed by Duncan Theater, Peter’s Department Store, Bassett Clinic and Spirit Bank as a custodial engineer. He was dependable and conscientious.
Wilburn leaves a legacy of love, friendship and integrity. He had a sense of humor, was a good listener, and although he was a man of few words, his smile warmed hearts.
Wilburn was a faithful member and deacon of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Stillwatera.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Gussie, of the home; son and wife, Tim and Jill Johnson, of Galesburg, Ill.; brother, Jesse L. Johnson, of Paramount, Calif.; and Gussie’s sister and husband, Beatrice and John White, of Haywood, Calif.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Homegoing service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Wilburn’s honor to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, 902 S. Knoblock, Stillwater, OK 74074.
