Roger Hobart

Roger Hobart peacefully passed away from pancreatic cancer on Oct. 17, 2012. At age 89, he had a full and interesting life. He graduated from Enid High School and attended Phillips University before World War II complicated his life. As a B-17 Navigator in the 92nd Bomb Group in England, he lead his plane, squadron, group and wing on 31 missions over occupied Europe. He ended the war as a 1st Lieutenant, having earned a Distinguished Flying Cross and other medals. On his discharge, he enrolled at Oklahoma A&M (OSU), earning letters in track and field, a degree in Electrical Engineering, a wife named Freda Berkenbile Hobart, and a job with General Electric. He retired from GE 36 years later and stayed married 65+ years until his death. His employment history includes personnel support for the Space Programs in Houston and Huntsville.

Progeny includes sons Holly and Roger and daughters Phyllis and Nancy. There are currently 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  Roger considered his greatest non-family accomplishments to be his devotion to God and ministering to others. He was an elder at Eagle Heights Baptist Church, an active member of Gideon’s, a volunteer at several prison ministries, disaster relief efforts including hurricanes, tornadoes and the 9/11 cleanup, and building efforts in Africa, Guatemala, and Romania.

A memorial service is planned at the church on what would have been his 90th birthday, Nov. 3rd. Burial will be in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery. No other services are planned. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Judith Karman Hospice at P.O. Box 818, Stillwater, OK 74076, Gideon’s International at PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214, Eagle Heights Baptist Church and Minister Trung Tran (currently involved in Hurricane Katrina Recovery efforts) at PO Box 606, Biloxi, MS, 39533.
