Vernona "Nonie" Grau

Vernona “Nonie” Grau, longtime Stillwater resident, passed away May 1, 2013, in Stillwater. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Monday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church at Third Avenue and Knoblock in Stillwater, with family visitation after in the parish hall.

Nonie was born June 19, 1926, to Joseph and Lucy Alice (Peck) Svec in Faulkton, S.D.

She attended rural Faulk County one-room schools and Faulkton High School where she met Erwin Grau. They were married in September 1946 and farmed north of Burkmere. She moved to Stillwater in 1958 while Erwin was attending OSU School of Veterinary Medicine. They later divorced.

Nonie’s legacy was a strong work ethic. While raising her family, she was employed at McCaffree’s Drug and Swan Hose (until plant closing), and as a housekeeping supervisor for Stillwater Medical Center, retiring in 1993. She loved children and cared for many in her home until 11 years ago.

She is survived by five children, including daughter Renee (Alan) Bodine of Stillwater; son Richard (Rebecca) Grau of Edmond; daughter Maurita (Ron) Crawford of Stillwater; daughter Marie (Daryl) Hall of Sand Springs; son Charlie (Lisa) Grau of Tulsa; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous family members and friends.

Nonie was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Rochelle (Dave) Hunt; infant great-grandson Garrett Lee Crawford; brother Edwin Svec; and sister Allane Nolte.

Nonie enjoyed doing embroidery, was an excellent seamstress and loved eating Lay’s potato chips while she sat in her recliner watching television with her eyes closed. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren, traveling throughout the United States to visit them.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Judith Karman Hospice, P.O. Box 818,   Stillwater, 74076, or Stillwater Medical Center Foundation, benefiting Breast Cancer/Women’s Health, P.O. Box 2408, Stillwater, 74076.

The family will have a private burial service at a later time in the Faulkton cemetery.
