John William Taylor

Funeral service for John William Taylor, 85, Enid, will be 11 A.M. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church, Enid, with the Rev. Randy Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

John was born Oct. 26, 1927, in Enid and was the only child of William and Nellie Ratcliff  Taylor  and passed away Friday, June 14, 2013, at his home.

After graduating Enid High School in 1944 at the age of 16, he briefly attended Phillips University. Shortly thereafter, John enlisted in the Air Force because of his lifelong love of flying. He served as a staff sergeant in Guam. Prior to his deployment, he met and started courting his future wife, Sue Hackleman of Stillwater after meeting at the swimming pool in Green Mountain Falls, Colo. They married six years later on June 5, 1950, in Stillwater. After being discharged, John attended Oklahoma A&M until he returned to Enid to help run the Enid Publishing Co., where he served as president and owner  until 1989. He was owner of KCRC-KNID radio stations and Enid Two-Way.

John was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, former president of the YMCA and the Enid Chamber of Commerce and honored as a Distinguished Alumni of OSU as well as serving on the OSU Board of Governors. Because of his close connections to Oklahoma State, he was a die hard Cowboys fan and an avid supporter of all things Cowboys. In fact he was even known to fly Coach (Jim) Stanley on recruiting visits. Later, John and Sue made a donation which allowed Oklahoma State to create and furnish the formal dining room at the College of Hotel and Restaurant Administration as well as helping in the creation of the Karsten Creek Golf Club. John had a deep love for La Veta, Colo., and spent many family trips enjoying hunting, fishing, ranching and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Sue of the home, daughter Kathryn and Mike Upchurch, grandchildren, Taylor and  Tara Burnett, Barrett and Kourtnei Storm, all of Woodward; son, Tom and Betsy Taylor of Steamboat Springs, Colo., grandchildren Billy Taylor of Scottsdale, Ariz., Brenden Taylor of Denver, Colo., Kyla Taylor of Steamboat Springs, Colo., son, Steve and Lori Taylor of Woodward; grandchildren, Dianne Gilchrist and Kelly Ryan of Santa Fe, N.M., daughter Susan Mayberry of Yukon;  grandchildren Wyatt Morgan and Mallory Mayberry; great-grandchildren Abbey, Sofey, and Nelley Burnett, Kamden Phillips, Brayson, and Brooks Storm, Kenny Jack Gilchrist; and caretaker, Brad Walker.

Memorials in his name may be made to the John and Sue Taylor Presidential Distinguished Scholarship of OSU, OSU Foundation, PO Box 1749, Stillwater, OK, or to the First United Methodist Church with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
