Dr. Roger Joseph Schoeppel

Dr. Roger Joseph Schoeppel, 83, of Muskogee, Okla., passed from this life on Tuesday Oct. 2, 2012 at Magnolia Gardens Health Care Center.

Roger was born on June 23, 1929 in Chester, Ill., to Mayetta and Ava Schoeppel. Roger attended school in Sparta, Illinois. He enlisted in the military where he was a Paratrooper. During his enlistment, he rose to the rank of First Lieutenant. Roger was honorably discharged at the end of the Korean War.

Roger attended the University of Missouri at Rolla where he earned his B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Petroleum Engineering. Roger received his Ph.D in Engineering-Science at the University of Oklahoma.

Roger worked as a consulting petroleum engineer and founded the Energy Resources Institute. He taught Petroleum Engineering at Oklahoma State University until he retired. After retirement, he became a Senior Patent Examiner in the Patent Office in Wash. D.C. Roger held 14 U.S. and foreign invention patents and was the author of 42 publications related to his field. His greatest professional accomplishment was patenting a process to convert a gasoline engine to one that ran on hydrogen gas.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary Josephine Schoeppel; brother, Millard Schoeppel and sisters, Barbara Peyton and Dolores MacIntosh.

Roger is survived by his wife, Charlene Pruden Schoeppel of the home; son, Steve Schoeppel and wife Traci of Muskogee; daughters, Karen Fitzgerald and husband Dan of Falls Church, VA, and Jana Barrett and husband Randy of Crested Butte, Colo.; stepdaughter, Beth Pruden Tucker and husband Larry of Muskogee, and stepson, Robert A, Pruden and wife Dolores of Carrollton, Texas. Roger had fourteen grandchildren, Steffin, Troy, and Seth Schoeppel, John, Jessica, and Rebecca Fitzgerald, Benjamin and Graham Barrett, Kristina Olson, Candyce Parent, Mary Charlene Tucker, Jason and Justin Pruden, and Jennifer DiGennaro. He was also survived by eight great-grandchildren.

Honorary attendees will be the Cornerstone Sunday School class of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2130 W. Okmulgee, Muskogee, OK 74401.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Reverand Mark Jardine and Reverend Greg Boyd officiating.
