Mildred Pruett Lee

Mildred Pruett Lee, 85, died on Dec. 25, 2012, in Guthrie, Okla. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the University Heights Baptist Church in Stillwater, with Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred was born on Feb. 22, 1927, in Oklahoma City to Haskell and Agnes (Murray) Pruett. She became a Stillwater resident in 1935, and graduated from Stillwater High School in 1944. Mildred continued her education at Oklahoma State University where she graduated in 1948 Suma Cum Laude with a B.S. in Education with teaching certificates in Commerce, Spanish and English. In 1954, she earned her M.S. in Business Education. Mildred utilized all aspects of her teaching degree during her various occupations. She taught commercial subjects in Anthony, Kan., from 1948-1949. She also taught typing to women in the Air Force in both Stillwater and Anthony, Kan. From 1949 until 1952, Mildred worked as a secretary at OSU in Correspondence Study. Mildred later taught first grade at Westwood Elementary School when it opened in the spring of 1951. From 1954 until 1959, she was the head secretary in the State Office of Vocational Trade and Industrial Education. She also taught Spanish and English to students at the Stillwater Junior High from 1959 until 1961 and 1964 until 1967. She then became a self-employed thesis typist.

She was very active in the community and had been a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Pi Epsilon, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Order of Rainbow for Girls (past Grand Musician and recipient of the Grand Cross Award), Stillwater High School Alumni Association, Wagon Wheel Square Dance Club, Highland Hills Extension Homemakers, Stillwater Bridge Club, Stillwater Travel Club, and she was a Girl Scout leader from 1968 until 1973.

Mildred enjoyed music. She began piano lessons at the age of five and started pipe organ lessons at age eight. At nine years old, she gave a concert on the pipe organ for the Dallas Guild of Organists in Dallas, Texas. She continued playing the piano and the organ for her church, University Heights Baptist Church, since it was founded. She was a charter member of University Heights Baptist Church and also served as their historian.

Mildred married Thomas W. Lee on Oct. 2, 1949, in Stillwater. They lovingly raised two children and enjoyed over 61 years of marriage before Tom’s death in 2011.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Dressler M. Pruett.

Mildred is survived by her son, Robert E. Lee, and his wife, Connie, of Edmond, Okla.; daughter, Lynette S. Lee, of Jenks.; and grandchildren, Jeremy and his wife Jessie, Abigail, and Zechariah Lee.
