Lavon Ray Sutton, 78, of Ponca City died in the company of her loving family on the evening of Wednesday Jan. 9, 2012 after a 10 month battle for recovery from a March 1, 2012, stroke.
She was born Lavon Ray Lloyd in Hominy, on Nov. 18, 1934, the daughter of Raymond Cass Lloyd and Lenora Cummins. Her father, a county agent, moved the family to Wagoner, then Bartlesville, then on to Pawhuska where Lavon graduated in 1953. Lavon graduated from Oklahoma A&M in 1957 with a bachelor’s of science degree in home economics. Lavon then moved to Ponca City to begin teaching second grade at Liberty School in 1957. That same year she met Earl Sutton, a young Conoco engineer from Pittsburgh, Pa. They were married in Pawhuska on Aug. 8, 1958, a marriage that lasted 54 years.
Lavon was active in the Ponca City community. She served as president of P.E.O., was a member of the 20th Century Club as well as other clubs and organizations. She was also a talented pianist.
Lavon traveled the world. Highlights were the challenges and pleasures of being a homemaker for the family during Earl’s Conoco assignments in Libya and Singapore. The family returned to Ponca City in 1975 where Lavon was supportive of Earl as he left Conoco and ventured into oil and gas exploration on his own.
Except for a brief career as a teacher, Lavon was primarily a homemaker and she was the perfect homemaker. She was beautiful, talented in so many ways, a loving supportive selfless wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be greatly missed.
Lavon was predeceased by her father, mother, and younger brother Eddie. Lavon is survived by her husband Earl, daughter Stacey of Denver, Colo., and daughter Polly with husband Joe Vosilla of Deerfield Beach, Fla., her son Eddie with wife Veronica of Stillwater, parents of Lavon’s grandchildren Riley, Cody, and Sabrina. She is also survived by her sister Carol Douglas with husband Ben of Stillwater, sister Janell Lewallen with husband Bill of Odessa, Texas, nieces Rhonda and Terri, and nephews Raymond, Blaine, Clint, and Bart.
No funeral service will be held. The family will hold a weekend memorial service in Ponca City in early spring devoted to the celebration of Lavon’s wonderful life. In lieu of flowers the family wishes contributions to be made to the Ponca City Habitat for Humanity.
