Gladys Beatrice Burger Hagle

Gladys Beatrice Burger Hagle, of Blackburn, entered the gates of heaven on Wednesday, Jan., 30, 2013.  She was 89 years old.

Gladys was born in Agra, Okla., on March 6, 1923 to John Oda Burger and Lucinda Jane Johnston Burger.  She was the third of seven children.  She attended school in Agra and Kendrick, Okla., at the Valley Center School.  In 1938 Gladys moved with her family to the family farm southeast of Blackburn.

On March 8, 1941, two days after her 18th birthday, Gladys and Famus Hagle were married in Skedee, Okla.  Famus loved to tell the story of seeing Gladys walking by and saying to his life-long friend, and later to be brother-in-law, Jess Laswell, “I’m gonna marry that girl”, (and he did).  They celebrated 54 years of marriage before Famus’ death in 1995.  The couple had three children:  Judith Gay, Gloria Jean, and Beverly Ann.  In 1942, while Famus was in the army, Gladys lived in Clarksville and worked as a children’s caregiver, and in a dry cleaner’s shop in order to be near Famus.  When she returned to Blackburn, she cared for Famus’ father and his grandfather, who was in ill health and blind.  In Oct. 1941, Famus and Gladys bought a farm near Blackburn and she lived there until her death.  She served her family as a homemaker and assisted with the family farming operation.  She was actively involved with her children and all of their activities.

She was a wonderful homemaker.  Her home was     always open to friends and filled with the fragrance of something cooking on the stove.  Gladys was a fiercely loyal friend, a dependable, hard worker and always available to help out her family and friends.  She had a lively sense of humor and enjoyed teasing those around       her.

Gladys was a Christian and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Blackburn.  She was very caring and compassionate.  She was known to deliver meals, drive neighbors to doctor appointments and to church  which included taking a friend to the early service at the Methodist Church and then going to her own Baptist Church afterward.  She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much, keeping them on the farm during the summer and attending many of their activities.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Famus; son-in-law, Bob Fisher; granddaughter-in-law, Katie Womack; sister Opal Smith; and brothers, Johnny and Oda Burger.

Survivors are her three daughters, Judy Fisher, Cleveland; Gloria Jean (Jeanne) Gibson and husband, Bill, Ponca City; Beverly Ann Carter and husband, Mack, Stillwater; eight grandchildren along with their spouses:  Rob Fisher and wife, Gretchin; Gary Fisher and wife, Cassie; Ryan Fisher; Jeff Gibson; Brad Gibson; Lori Womack; Steve Womack and wife, Brandi; and David Womack; seven great-grandchildren:  Caleb McCray, Taeah and Piper Fisher, Kelsey Fisher, Rylee Fisher, Guner and Abby Womack.  Sisters, Evelyn Goins, Alta Compton, and Glenyce Compton.  She is also survived by her wonderful friends and caregivers, Kay Dobenburger and Myrna Barnes.

Casket Bearers will be her grandchildren.  They will carry her in death, as she carried them in life.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at the Blackburn Cemetery Pavilion, Blackburn, Okla., under the direction of Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee, Okla.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Blackburn Cemetery, P O Box 133, Cleveland OK 74020 or Judith Karman Hospice, P O Box 828, Stillwater, OK 74076.
