Fred Raymond Stokes

Longtime Stillwater resident, Fred Raymond Stokes, 96, died at his home on Friday, July 12, 2013.  Fred was born on Jan. 13, 1917 to the late Robert Wesley and Lottie Eural (Webber) Stokes in Glencoe. He entered the U.S. Navy with the Seabees in 1943 and dutifully served his country in the Pacific until he was honorably discharged at the end of World War II in 1945 with the rank of metalsmith second Class.  From 1946 until his retirement in 1982, he worked as the body shop manager at Ward Chevrolet which later became known as Vincent Chevrolet.

In 1939, he married Mary Robinson.  The couple had one son, John, who passed from this life in 1999.  On Feb. 22, 1950, he married Minnie “Delores” Klutsenbaker. The couple lovingly raised four children, Karen, Linda, Keith and Sandra, before Delores passed away on Feb. 27, 1983.  On June 24, 1984, Fred remarried again, to Maxine Charlotte Long White.  They made their home in the Hillside area of Stillwater before moving to Golden Oaks Village. They enjoyed 22 wonderful years of marriage until Maxine’s death in 2007.  He was a faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Stillwater.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wives; one son, John Deering; a granddaughter, Amber Johnston; two sisters, Marjorie Harrison and Doris Miller; and two brothers, Kenneth and Luster Stokes.

Fred is survived by one brother, Willis Stokes and his wife Tana, of Stillwater; one son, Keith Stokes and his wife Doris, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Karen Stokes and Linda Stokes, both of Las Vegas, Nev., and Sandra Wright and her husband Jim, of Midwest City; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Klutsenbaker and his wife Charlene, of Stillwater; as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
