Omer Ray “Ray J.” Johnson, 71, died on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at his home in Stillwater. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on Jan. 3, 1942, to John Sherman and Ada (Stewart) Johnson in Oakland, Cali. He attended Perkins-Tryon School and worked at Mac’s Body Shop for over 50 years as an auto mechanic. On Aug. 28, 1967, he married Celestine Esparza in Stillwater. Together, they lovingly raised five children and enjoyed 45 years of marriage.
He was a member of the Moose Fraternity since Nov. 17, 1966, and later enrolled as a Moose Legionnaire in 1972. He was bestowed his High Degree as Fellow in 1976, and he was a member of the 25 Club since 1974. During his lifetime as a member, he sponsored a total of 133 into the fraternity and sponsored another 20 legionnaires.
In his Home Lodge, he held every position on the Board of Officers from Outer Guard to Governor. He was Governor four times, Jr. Governor four times, Jr. Past Governor eight times, and was currently holding position as a three-year trustee. He also held several Chairs in the lodge as Lodge Moose Legion Chairman and Marshall, Endowment Fund Chairman, Membership Co-Chairman, and was currently holding both of these chairs. He was Vice President, Sergeant-at-Arms, Inner Guard, Endowment Fund Chairman and Moose Charities Chairman in Oklahoma Moose Association District II. In the OMA, he was the Endowment Fund and Moose Charities Chairman and an Outer Guard. In Higher Degree positions he held President, Vice President and Moose Legion 147 Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms. He was a role model for any new member as well as veterans in the fraternity. He volunteered for any task and just recently volunteered for the Special Olympics in Oklahoma City. Ray J. was also a charter member of the Stillwater Eagles.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Sherman and Ada (Stewart) Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Celestine “Tina” Johnson, of Stillwater; daughter, Hanna Johnson Straub, of Pauls Valley; son, Kevin Douglas Johnson, of Wynnewood; son, Johnny Joseph Johnson, of Germany; daughter, Judilea McGlade, of Stillwater; daughter, Malinda L. Duncan, of Marrero, La.; grandchildren, Brent Simon, Leslie Simon, Lea Johnson, Marissa McGlade, Barnabas Eggers, Dietrich Eggers, Milton Eggers, Jazmin Johnson, Zak Johnson; and sister, Analee Smith.
