Vera Louise Bartel

Vera Louise Bartel was born on April 14, 1933, to Willard and Rosa Marker, near Gate. She graduated from Laverne High School in 1951. After one year of college in Goodwell, Louise married Dean Bartel on Aug. 3, 1952. After moving to Alta Vista, Kan., Louise had two children: Del, born in 1956, and Holly, born in 1960. In 1962, the Bartels moved to Dodge City Kan., where they remained until 2000, when Dean and Louise moved to Stillwater. In 2012, they moved once again to Tulsa, Okla., in order to be closer to Del and his family.

Louise spent most of her life as a full-time homemaker, but also operated an in-home custom drapery business and did occasional bookkeeping services for small businesses in Dodge City. She was a meticulous seamstress and made beautiful custom birthday cakes for her children and her pie crust was always crimped to perfection. Louise was born during hard times but it made her a strong person who always held her ground. She was not easily intimidated and was not afraid to speak her mind, but also showed great compassion for many others less fortunate than her. She was a friend to the friendless, to foreign exchange students, neighbor kids, and any other lonely souls who needed a sense of family. She truly had the gifts of hospitality and congeniality, and was spontaneous and fun to be around — always full of life and energy. Louise was a devoted daughter to her parents, a faithful wife, a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and a great neighbor and friend.

Louise passed suddenly on Dec. 8, 2013, at Tulsa's St. Francis Hospital during what looked to be a promising recovery from heart surgery. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Rosa Marker of Gate, and her older brother, Wayne Marker from Arizona. She is survived by her husband of over 61 years, Dean Bartel, of Tulsa. She is also survived by her two children: Del, of Tulsa, and Holly, of Boston. Also, 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all. Louise spoke emphatically about her commitment to Jesus Christ, and is now with Him for eternity.
