Rev. James Junior Manuel

The Rev. James Junior Manuel, 68, of Drumright, passed away on Dec. 5, 2013, in Tulsa.  Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Rev. James Reed officiating.  Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery.  Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Manuel was born Aug. 13, 1945, in Stillwater to Mr. and Mrs. James Manuel. He grew up and attended schools in Stillwater and then Phoenix, Ariz., for his Christian studies. Manuel became the pastor of Cushing’s First Baptist Church where he ministered for 19 years. He and his wife Janice moved to Nicodemus, Kan., and he pastored the First Missionary Baptist Church for six years.  He also pastored the Poplar Grove Baptist Church of Humboldt, Kan., for a year and a half.

Rev. and Sis Manuel or “Babe” traveled many miles between Oklahoma and Kansas while lovingly serving the Lord. Over the years, they met and made many friends during their ministry.  Manuel faced his health issues with bravery and with trust in the lord. He always had a kind word to say during his illness and depended on his lord for the outcome. He was a willing listener when others had problems.  He was blessed to have the best and most loving care from “Babe” that anyone could desire.  She was by his side with love and encouragement, always. Manuel loved fried chicken and desserts.  His favorite pasttimes were fishing, gardening, all sports and meeting and making new friends.

Those left to cherish, with fond memories include: kis loving wife Janice of the home; two sons, Ryan Manuel of Oklahoma City and James Manuel Jr. of Stillwater, one daughter, Cherron Manuel Upocka and her husband Eric of Stillwater. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother J.D. Hallstead of Commerce City, Colo., and his first wife Connie Vicks Manuel. He is also survived one step child Comara Leatherman and her husband Wilber of Enid, and six step-grandchildren.

Life’s race well run, life’s work well done, Life’s crown well won, and now he rests.
