Lillie Lee Holbrook Hert

At the age of 100 years, three months, and 15 days, Lillie Lee Hert went to be with her Lord and Savior. “Lil” peacefully joined the love of her life, Judge Robert L. Hert Sr,, and many of her family and friends. There was a come and go celebration of a life well lived at Strode Funeral Home from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a private family burial.

Lil was born to her parents Walker Hardin and Nora Clark Holbrook in their home northwest of Perkins on a snowy December night when her uncle Dr. Ralph W. Holbrook arrived by buggy to deliver her just in time for Christmas 1913.

Lil and her brother Dale attended IXL Country School prior to graduating from Perkins High School. Lil had wonderful stories to tell about life in early Perkins and the early settlers, many of whom were related to her. She honed her love for Cowboy orange through two years of attendance at Oklahoma A&M and married a Perkins boy, Robert L. Hert. Her journey through life with Bob Hert led to the establishment of a law firm in Stillwater and a term in the Oklahoma state legislature. Like so many of her generation, Lil was responsible for a family of three young children while Maj. Robert Hert went to Europe and served with the U.S. Army on a tour of duty in France and Germany. Her support after the war never wavered for a successful young lawyer who had several uncontested terms as district judge of Payne and Logan counties. Her ability to juggle the activities of three children and all of the demands of supporting her husband provided an example of grace and dedication for many to follow.

Following his retirement as district judge and a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, Lil and “The Judge” traveled to numerous sites in Hawaii, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Canada and Mexico. Later, she traveled with her children to Alaska and the Rockies, England and Paris. Lil was just as comfortable having high tea in Vancouver and London as she was standing in line at the truck stop in South Dakota with the “Biker Dollies” on their way to Sturgis for the motorcycle rally! There are probably still people who remember her driving the “Adult Beverage” cart at a golf tournament in Hawaii or celebrating her 90th birthday in the Voodoo Lounge atop the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas! She never mastered the art of the nickel slot machine and kept her family at a casino until almost midnight trying to get rid of the $10 worth of nickels she had. Lil and the Judge were willing “pushers” of a rather suspect VW camper and followed the Judge’s first U.S. Army sponsored trip through Europe, and she cut quite the figure dressed in miner’s overalls as she slid down the wooden slide in the salt mines in Salzburg, Austria!

Lil and Judge were OSU season ticket holders for many years. In later years she enjoyed attending OSU basketball games with her good friends.

Lil was an active supporter of Boy Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts, the First Christian Church Circle, the 20th Century Club, president of Theta Mom’s Club, Eastern Star for 78 years, and PEO member of Chapter BU for over 60 years.

Lil is survived and already lovingly missed by her children Martha A. Lyon and her husband Col. Don A. Lyon, Mary Lee Hert Draper, and Judge Robert L. Hert, Jr. and his wife Joan. She was the grandmother of six grandchildren, Cherie Leean Draper, Dan Draper, III, Rob Hert, Carrie Hert Bishop and husband Jeff, Clay Hert and wife Alyssa and Don Lyon Jr. and wife Jennifer.

She was also the proud great-grandmother to 10; Meagan and Drew Lyon, Anna, Sterling and Caroline Draper, Luke and Brian Hert and Brandt, Hunter and Holden Bishop.

The Hert family is eternally grateful for Lil’s caregivers Vivian Todd and Hilda Anderson for the years of dedicated and loving care. Any remembrances may be given in Lil’s memory to The Judith Karman Hospice, P.O. Box 818, Stillwater, OK, 74076, or to The Humane Society of Stillwater, 1710 S. Main St., Stillwater, OK, 74074, in honor of Poochie, Puddles and Lucky Hert!

One more special thanks! Judge and Lil Hert welcomed me into their family over 50 years ago and I could not have been more blessed!

They treated me like their own son even as I dragged their daughter all over the world and Bob and Mary Lee are my other brother and the sister I never had. I have only wonderful in-law stories!

Condolences may be sent to the family and an online obituary may be viewed by visiting www.strodefh.com.
