Mary Frances Clark Sawyer

Mary Frances Clark Sawyer was born to Walker Fredrick and Mary Elizabeth Ittner Clark in Glencoe on Sept. 2, 1924. She passed from this life on Tuesday in Oklahoma City, having reached the age of 89 years, and 23 days.  Her childhood was spent in Glencoe, where she attended Glencoe Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1941.

During and following World War II, she worked in the Oklahoma City offices of Armour & Co. Meat Packers and also at the offices of Safeway Stores. She married Clarence Dowler in Oklahoma City on Nov. 22, 1944, and they had twin daughters, one who died at birth. The remaining daughter, Shirley, made her home with Orvil Sawyer and Mary following their marriage in Pawnee on Jan. 26, 1953. Orvil brought two children to the marriage, Eddie and Lynne, who Mary loved and considered her own. Orvil and Mary owned and operated Sawyer Grocery Store in Glencoe for many years.

Mary was an active member of the Glencoe United Methodist Church, where she taught the kindergarten class for more than 28 years. She was also active in the United Methodist Women organization and had served as communion steward for over 50 years. She was active in PTA and the Glencoe Alumni Association, holding offices in each, and also belonged to the Rambo Rustler’s Club and the Worthwhile Club. She enjoyed square dancing and bowling with her husband in earlier years. In later years, she loved having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren around her and considered the time she spent with them a special gift from God.

Mary is survived by son, Eddie Sawyer and his wife, Loretta, Westwego, La.; daughter, Lynne Campbell and her husband, Dennis, Enid; granddaughters,         Cindy Beyer and her husband, Damon, Katy, Texas, Pam Ryan and her husband, Bill, Champaign, Ill., Anita Luetkemeyer and her husband, Mark, Enid, Mona Campbell, Ft. Plus numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Orvil; twin daughters, Carol Jean Dowler and Shirley Ann Dowler; her parents; and her brother, Leonard Clark.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Glencoe United Methodist Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Ralph Wangler officiating. Interment will be at Glencoe Cemetery, in Glencoe, under the direction of Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Glencoe United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 30, Glencoe, Oklahoma, 74032.
