Michael (Mike) Ray Abernathy

Michael (Mike) Ray Abernathy was born Aug. 15, 1951, in Topeka, Kan. He was one of a set of twin boys born to Arless and June Abernathy. He died Oct. 4, 2013.

As a boy, in Yate Center, Kan., Mike loved to attach a cart to their little horse named Blackie and ride around with his brother.  Mike’s mom knew early in life that he was mechanically inclined because he would constantly take things apart. (I think he eventually learned how to put them back together). His business sense was evident when he started earning money by raking & mowing lawns and shoveling snow. When he got his money, he liked the feel of rubbing and rattling those coins together in his pocket.   He also worked as a soda jerk; can you imagine how many pranks he played on those customers? His mom said Mike also liked to cook as a teenager and would often help out in the kitchen when they lived above their jewelry store.

In 1975, he married the love of his life, Cindy K. Sheppard, at Eastland Assembly, Tulsa. They resided in Inola, Stillwater, Tulsa and Sand Springs. They have one son, Joshua Ray Abernathy. They spent much of their life together camping, jeeping, river rafting and Mike’s greatest passion - riding motorcycles. He was very passionate about life…whether he was working on cars or out riding…he worked hard and played hard. His family taught him endurance for business and working hard during the week, but weekends belonged to adventure.

Mike established Abby-Auto-Fix-It in 1986, just outside of Stillwater - a highly successful auto repair business. He did everything at the shop with excellence. He was a highly trusted mechanic who really did care about you and your car.

Mike is survived by his wife, Cindy Kay of Sand Springs; his son, Joshua Ray, daughter-in-law Sasha, & grandsons Ezekiel and Noah Abernathy of Englewood, Colo.; his mother, June Abernathy, of Stillwater; and siblings, Arlene Hegwald, of Chanute, Kan., Kathy Lovell, Pat Abernathy and Dennis Abernathy, all of Stillwater. He was predeceased by his father, Arless Abernathy.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 902 N. Washington St. in Stillwater. The church’s number is 405-372-7330.

Online memorials may be left for the family of Mike at www.dillonsmithfuneralservice.com

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Dillon & Smith Funeral Service of Sand Springs.
