Esther Mae Hazen Honska

Esther Mae Hazen Honska, 83, a longtime resident of Stillwater, died on June 5, 2013, in Oklahoma City, where she had recently moved. The family will greet friends at Strode Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday.

Her funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater with a reception following.

After the reception, a graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa at 2:30 p.m. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Esther was born on June 16, 1929, in Parco, Wyo., to Harold Orville Hazen Sr. and Ruth Temple Hazen.

She was the youngest of five children: three sisters, Margaret, Helen, Rhoda, and one brother, Harold.  When Esther was 2 years old, her family moved from Parco (now Sinclair, Wyo.) to Tulsa, where she grew up and graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1947.  While attending high school and working in downtown Tulsa in the summers, she met her future husband Lee (Walter L. Honska).

Esther attended Oklahoma City University on a full ride as a Banner Scholar, and majored in elementary education with a minor in foreign languages.  She was also named a Keosia Queen.

After graduating from OCU, she married Lee at the First United Methodist Church in Tulsa on Aug. 10, 1951.

They had dated for six years before marrying.  Lee attended OU Medical School in Oklahoma City, while Esther taught first grade for five years at Thomas Edison Elementary School.

She loved teaching and her students, and especially enjoyed giving her students the gift of reading and a love for learning.

According to some former students, she is still used as an answer to “favorite teacher” for computer security questions.

While living in Oklahoma City, she and Lee attended St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

Esther and Lee moved to Stillwater in the summer of 1960 and became members of the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater.  Esther volunteered in the local schools and at her church.

Esther and Lee had three children, Mark, Susan, and Jane.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and embodied the love of Christ here on earth.  She not only introduced her children to Christ, but also taught them to love and respect others, and that love can truly conquer all.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Lee Honska Jr.; and her sisters, Margaret Wells and Helen Ellison, both of Texas.

She is survived by her brother, Harold Hazen, and his wife, Faye, of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Rhoda Hazen Bailey, of Tulsa; son, Mark Honska, and wife, Susan, of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; daughter, Susan Honska Stunkel, and husband, Craig, of Bethel, Conn.; daughter, Jane Honska Johnson, and her husband, Sam, of Edmond; and her grandchildren: Leanne Stunkel of New York City, Kevin Stunkel and his wife Maria of Iowa City, Iowa, and Alicia Johnson of Edmond.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church at 400 W. 7th Ave., Stillwater, Okla., 74074.
