Frances Dorthory (Zawisza) Downey

Frances Dorothy (Zawisza) Downey, age 91, of Coyle, Okla. passed away Feb. 16, 2013, at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, Okla. She was born on March 12, 1921 in Harrah, Okla. to Joseph J. Zawisza and Genevieve Ann Babiak. Frances had lived in the Coyle area after marrying Elmer M. Downey on Aug. 1, 1943, in Harrah, Okla.. She was a teacher at Coyle Schools at the time she met Mr. Downey and continued her love of education and music for the rest of her life. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guthrie. She was a Coyle 4-H leader for 14 years, director of musical groups at school and community functions. She was also a member of the Logan County Farm Bureau Women's Committee, the Coyle Extension Homemakers Club and a member of the American Quarter Horse Association for over 40 years. Mrs. Downey also served on the local Election Board. In 1968, the Elmer and Frances Downey Family was selectd as the Oklahoma State Farm Bureau Family of the Year. Survivors include her three daughters, JoAnn D. Hale and husband Richard of Coyle, Sharon D. Maloney and husband Johnny of Jackson, Miss. and Cindy D. Griggs and husband Guy of Sand Springs; one sister, Louise Guthrie of Midwest City and one brother, Joe Zawisza, Jr. of Harrah; five grandsons, Jason R. Hale, Blake A. Hale, J.D. Maloney, Garrett R. Griggs and Carson D. Griggs; and several nieces and nepphews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Elmer M. Downey. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guthrie with Rev. Robert Wood officiating. Burial will follow at Coyle Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home, Guthrie. Friends and family may sign the online guestbook at www.hayesfh.com.
