Hazel Irene Armstrong

Hazel Irene Armstrong, a longtime Cushing area resident, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013, in the Stillwater Medical Center at the age of 95 years.

Funeral services have been entrusted to the care of the Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, and will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Cushing, with Pastor Sonny Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park.

The daughter of the late William and Zola (Evans) Rishell, Hazel was born on Sept. 8, 1917, in Hope, Ark. She grew up in the Sparks, Shawnee, Cushing and Drumright communities, graduating from Drumright High School in the class of 1934.

Hazel was united in marriage to Gilbert Armstrong on Dec. 4, 1934, in Cushing and to this union two sons, Don and Tom, were born.  The Armstrongs lived in and around Cushing until 1947 when they moved to a farm they purchased located southeast of Cushing. Hazel worked for a few years as a secretary for Robert Revis Insurance in Cushing but spent most of her time working on the farm.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cushing for more than 70 years and was a member of the “Friendly 20 Club.”  In her spare time, she loved to paint, collect antiques and frequent estate sales and garage sales.

Hazel  is survived by her two sons, Don Armstrong and his wife Nelda of Cushing and Tom Armstrong and his wife Judith of Cushing; seven grandchildren, Janet Riley, Terry Don Armstrong, Gary Lee Armstrong, Allie Smith, Sara Spotts and Becky Hessing and Janey Cooper; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert Armstrong; one sister, Elnora Spain, and two granddaughters, Janette Armstrong and Cindy Armstrong.
