Charles Eugene O’Donnell

Charles Eugene O’Donnell, 77, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at his home in Edmond. Funeral services will be held at 11  a.m. on Saturday at the Carney High School Auditorium in Carney with Pastor Wilmer Cooper officiating and Pastor Bo Gibbs providing music. Interment will follow at the Perkins Cemetery in Perkins. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles was born on May 28, 1936, in Vinco, to Charles Bernard and Laurel (Cypert) O’Donnell. He attended school in Stillwater, graduating from Stillwater High School. He attended college at the University of Tulsa and East Central University, and Oklahoma State University, earning both bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees. On Aug. 15, 1958, he married the love of his life, Nancy Walker and they were together until his death.

He served as coach, high school principal and school superintendent during his career at Hollis, Perry and Carney. During his first three years of coaching football, he won a state championship at Gabbs, Nev. He was a member of the Church of Christ and the Rotary Club in which he served as president. His professional associations include the Oklahoma Education Association, the National Education Association, Oklahoma Coaches Association, and an advocate/sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Charles loved his life. He especially loved fishing with his brothers, son and grandson. While coaching, he took annual fishing trips with his players. For 46 years, his students and players were his motivation to promote the highest standards and ideals of education

Gardening was another fond activity for which Charles set a goal he never reached — to have a garden better than his brother Bob’s! As with all endeavors, he gave his best.

Charles is preceded in death by parents, Charles and Laurel O’Donnell and his sister, Karen Kay O’Donnell.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy O’Donnell of Edmond; son, Charles Joseph O’Donnell and wife, Leasa, of Wichita, Kan.; daughter Debra Kaye O’Donnell-Demier and husband, Sergio, of Edmond; grandchildren, Kaegen, Kale, and Kinley O’Donnell and Jonathon Demier; and brothers, James (Betty), Robert (Linda), Ted and Tim (Vicki) O’Donnell and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Pallbearers will be his nephews Babe, Ty, Colby, Tommy, Teddy and Jake O’Donnell. Honorary pallbearers include Charles Joseph, James, Robert, Ted and Tim O’Donnell, Bob Ketch, Jerry Keys, Joe Wilson, Leslie Walker, Kale Joseph O’Donnell, and Jonathon Lucas Demier.

During his prolonged illness, Charles enjoyed learning about and supporting dog rescue efforts. He loved hearing the stories of the rescues and eventual adoptions. Chloe, his favorite rescue dog, always had a loving home in Charles’ lap.

Charles would be proud to have contributions made in his name to his favorite rescue organization: Because of You Rescue c/o Barbara Siegrist, 16008 Deer Ct., Edmond, OK  73013.
