Addie Berry Steward

Addie Berry Steward was born on Nov. 8, 1902 in Ala., to (Unknown First Name) Hillyard and Mary Berry Hillyard.  She passed from this life on Nov. 23, 2012 in Oklahoma City, Okla., having reached the age of 110 years, and 15 days.  She married Samuel S. Steward on Feb. 9, 1923 in Tulsa, Okla., and he preceded her in death on June 30, 1965.  She moved to Pawnee from Tulsa and in 1990 when her home burned she moved to Stillwater.   She worked for a number of years as a housekeeper and was also a midwife, helping deliver many children locally and in the surrounding area.  She was also the Church Mother and Church Treasurer at the Pawnee Methodist Church.

 From 2005 through 2011 she had been receiving special centenarian birthday letters and greetings from both President Bush and President Obama.  She received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition on Aug. 25, 2010 for being a centenarian from Congressman Frank Lucas , and was recognized with a certificate by the Pawnee County Department of Human Services centennial celebration party in 2007 in appreciation of 100 years of citizenship.

   Addie is survived by:  Daughter: Marie Abington & her husband, Willard, Stillwater, Okla.; Grandchildren:            Fred Alexander, Oklahoma City, Okla., Michelle Abington, Stillwater, Okla., Gary Stewart, Pawnee, Okla., Rose Stewart, Stillwater, Okla.; Great Grandchildren:  Michael Abington, Stillwater, Okla., Davian Stewart, Stillwater, Okla.,  Trey Stewart, Pawnee, Okla.

       Plus a number of cousins, other relatives, and special friends.

 Besides her husband, Samuel, she was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Berry Hillyard Ware and Mr. Hillyard; her stepfather, Austin Ware; sister, Emma Berry Powell; and five of her six children, Corrine Steward Fitchpatrick, Jimmy Stewart, Junior Steward, Eddie Steward, and Timmy Steward.          

  Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 at Poteet Funeral Chapel, Pawnee, Okla.  Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Pawnee, Oklahoma, under the direction of Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee, Okla.
